The Learning of Flight

So back when I was a little lad ;) I decide to learn how to snowboard for the sake of snowboarding on the mountain that I live on. Here is that first story of how I began to snowboard on my mountain...

Elk bowl. A small, about forty-five yards, yet extremely steep hill located about 30 steps away from my house. In the summer this hill has to be constantly weed whacked to prevent wildfires. In the fall the trees that line the sides make it seem as if the whole forest is on fire with color. And in winter this hill turns into a snowboarders dream. With snow drifts piling up to five or six feet tall, this place truly has some of the most amazing natural features that can provide countless hours of entertainment for young creative minds.

If you were to look down this bowl you would see a lot of these features right off: first, to the left is a nicely elevated earth pile about four feet high that will become close to a six foot jump, to the right you would see a wall of trees, literally a wall of trees so dense and so closely intertwined that it would be almost impossible for you to walk through I, and lastly if you looked straight down the bowl you would see at the bottom another pile of dirt and sticks all jumbled together into one big massive heap, known to us as the boneyard during winter on its account to trap unsuspecting snowboarders. There you have it Elf bowl, now for the story about how this hill became to be an essential part of my winter lifestyle.

Its December 2010, I had just learned how to snowboard the previous year at a resort (as the same time my friend was learning how to snowboard while my brother learned how to ski) and I thought that I was ready to take my riding to the next “level,” so to speak. Well school got out for Christmas break and my brother and our friend were sledding on some of the hills in my backyard, when I had the sudden idea to present the idea of snowboarding down Elk Bowl. Both my brother and our friend agreed and so we strapped on all our gear and looked down this intimidating hill. None of us wanted to go first. None of us knew where to go or even what was down there. So as the oldest, I was volunteered to go first.

I looked down the hill, noticed the little jump to the left, the trees to the right and, what I thought at the time, the much larger jump at the bottom (The Boneyard). I took a breath… and sat back down on my butt. My brother and friend gave me a weird look before I began to “check my gear” while trying to hide my fear. I hopped back onto my feet, took another deep breath… and leaned forward. Suddenly, I started going much faster than I had originally planned to go, I could feel the board beneath my feet shaking and sliding in different directions.

At that moment I thought that I was going to just fall on my face and eat some snow, however the laws of physics had another plan for me. As I began to fall towards the pillow like snow, my snowboard suddenly hit a hidden patch of ice and threw me to the far right… right into the wall of trees with needle branches. To put it in simple terms, I screamed like a banshee being ran over by a dying cat and moose at the same time (my brother still to this day makes fun of me whenever I scream saying that it almost sounds the same). I could feel blood running down my neck, I could already tell that my body was going to be showing a lot of blue and green the next day, and I couldn’t feel my legs because they were stuck in a tree.

From one simple accident, every time I see or snowboard on that hill that accident comes to mind. I learned that in order to have complete control while snowboarding you must understand the terrain before you snowboard. Elk Bowl is where I truly mastered snowboarding, its where I go every year to relearn and remember the mistakes that I’ve made and to become something better from them.  And that is the story of how I first learned how to snowboard on my mountain, the mountain that I live on and the mountain that provides security for my well being.

How to cook the ULTIMATE BURGER!!!!

Okay so apparently this wasn't posted the 2 weeks ago that it was finished, so I sincerely apologize for the wait!!! Here is what was written 2 weeks ago...

Well guys sorry for the long delay and no post last week. So I got some feedback that some people have wanted to know how to make my amazing hamburgers, and overall just how to cook a good hamburger.

So today I will teach you how this is done.

First I'll tell you my recipe for the hamburgers that I make. Then I will show how to cook hamburgers on a stove top and a barbeque grill.

Recipe for Cajian styled Hamburgers:
Prep: 15 min.
Makes about 8-10 Fairly Large Hamburgers
2 lbs. of ground beef (if frozen then thaw)
3 tablespoons of garlic salt
a little less then 3 tablespoons of smoked paprika
1.5 tablespoons of Montreal Steak seasoning
a dash of pepper

Once you have all of your ingredients layed out, then combine the meat and the spices into a large bowl. Now the fun part, begin mixing everything together with your hands, making sure that all part of the beef is covered in spices. Once the beef is significantly covered, or a dark rusty red from the smoked paprika, then begin forming the patties.

The way to make the patties is pretty simple, first form a ball about the size of a baseball, then begin to squish and form the patty between your two hands. Once you have a good sized patty, a little larger than the buns you are using, then take your thumb and push into the center of your patty to make a sort of dip in your patty. Don't press all the way through! Just enough so that the hole is a little lower than the rest of the patty.

Once this is done you've made your patties!! Now its time to get cookin ;)

How to Cook on a Stove Top

1st: Heat up your pan and stove up to about medium heat.

2nd: Put butter in the base of the pan, enough to coat the bottom, and swirl it around untill the whole inside of the pan is covered in butter.

3rd: Get your hamburger and place it in the pan. Wait, about 4-5 min. then flip over and repeat on otherside.

4th: Begin to check and flip hamburger untill hamburger is at desired doneness.

How to Cook on Gas Barbeque

I also made another video for this way, but here are the directions as well.

1st: Heat up your girll, you want this to be as hot as possible.

2nd: Clean off your grill to get rid of any other leftovers from the other cooking.

3rd: Place all of your hamburgers on the grill.

4th: Wait about 3 min. then flip and cook the other side. (Make sure that you are still able to get your grill temp pretty high)

5th: Waith 3 min. then check for desired doneness, if done pull them off!!

6th: Get an Indian accent and say, "Ohh Hamburger goodness!" Then stuff your face ;)

Starting Blog AGAIN!!!

Haha yes I know guys, its been a while since I've actually done this :P Haha but seriously I'm not a junior anymore and this time I can write about my own topics ;)

For those of you who are my friends, yet din't go to the same school as me, my 11th grade year we we're all forced (yes FORCED) to create blogs and write about different topics, some of our choosing and others not so agency allowed ;)

So this first week I'll just be doing mostly just an introduction so that anybody new can get to know me. So obviously my name is Chandler Bliss Helvey (that's why the blog is titled blissful snowboarding) I am now 18 and am attending BYU for one semester before I go serve my mission (do not know where yet :P).

I was borne and raised in Woodland Hills, Utah. Oh obviously I also love to snowboard and that's like my favouriteist thing (if that's even a word) to do.

I also love to read, play soccer, sleep, talk to friends, COOK ;) (yes this is true and I'm not lying) and also just be with my friends.

Ummm...... Oh I graduated from American Heritage High School, right across the street from the Mt. Timpanogos temple. I attended the school for all 4 years of my education.

And that's basically all about me, so next week I'm thinking of showing you all how to make the BEST burgers anywhere ;) So stayed tune for more info here at Blissful Snowboarding!!

To Kill a Mockingbird

Mockingbird
Mockingjay

To Kill a Mockingjay….. Wait Mockingbird.

Now those of us who have read this book know that the Mockingbird differs very much from the Mockingjay that we all know and love, thanks to Hunger Games, but anyways back to Mockingjay…. Bird sorry.

So many schools are thinking about banning this book, and it’s all because of more modern literature that they want to bring in, like Hunger Games, now in my personal opinion I would love this if I actually got a chance to read that series and all for school credit! However, To Kill a Mockingbird actually had some pretty good lessons that you could learn from this book.

Much like Hunger Games, To Kill a Mockingbird focus on the family and staying together through the thick and thin no matter who is trying to kill you and your family. Like Katniss fighting for her life among the arena, poor little Scout has to fight her way through the social world that surrounds her family and the catastrophe of her father losing his first case, the trial of a black man, Tom Robinson, for raping a white girl, Mayella Ewell (which is totally false). Once the trial is finished neither side is happy with the results, Tom gets put in prison, and Bob Ewell, the father of Mayella, his reputation (what was left of it) gets thrown down the garbage. So Bob then threatens Atticus and his family’s life and this is where Scout has to figure out how to protect herself.

Now let’s think back onto the Hunger Games, anyone remember who Katniss’ main enemy was? That’s right! CATO!!!!! Who is Scouts’ main enemy? Anyone? Well I’ll say it for you, its Bob Ewell…. Eghh. Yeah he’s not the best guy to have chasing you around in the dark. With a knife. While your dressed as a ham. And your older brother is on the ground with a broken arm… Needless to say Scout vanquishes her foe! Well sort of, Boo Radley, creepy next door neighbor, comes and does the dirty work, stabbing him, for Scout.

So now after I’ve bored you with endless streams of mixing and matching the Hunger Games to Kill a Mockingbird, showing you how certain things match up and how they are useful to us. But, hey I did do one thing right!

Do you know what that was????

Didn’t think so! HA!!!

Neither do I so I guess we’re both even.

But back to the boring story about people running around killing each other in a stupid arena. Mocking…jays? Wait wrong story.

So back to the boring story of saving your family and never giving up. To Kill a Mockingbird thingy I don’t even know what it is anymore. So in the end I guess schools should enforce this book more in public schools. Since all I can remember is Katniss. We do need some more of this so that we can be thankful that we didn’t grow up back then.

Crazy Articles

Police Found Guilty After a Creepy Case of Cannibalism

This is just too creepy… I mean who would think of committing such hideous crimes! I’m so glad that this guy got put away. However, I don’t know if you can convict a person because of the thoughts that they have had. On the contrary though if he was planning to actually go and commit these crimes, then he should be put away for the safety of the community into like an asylum or some other mental institute.

If the courts start to come out and start putting people away because of the “thoughts” that they’ve had then we are on our way onto a tyranny where people dictate our thoughts for us. Also how do the courts know what we have been thinking? That right there is creepy as well.

Now I’m not defending this guy, I’m just saying that the courts can’t try someone for the thoughts that they’ve had or that other people have made them think.

Google Concedes That Drive-by Prying Violated Privacy

Google Admits to Street View Project Privacy Breech

I don't understand why or even how Google was able to accomplish this without people knowing. I mean some people would have firewalls that would alert them to that right? Also how would they fit enough equipment into those little cars? However, it is amazing that Google was able to pull this off and not have people notice it for a while.

Its also strange that its now that Google has to go to court, why didn't anyone bring them to court sooner? Or even at least contact Google about this theft. However, is this accessing private information? Or is it just letting people know that this is possible? I mean couldn't any person come with their own supplies and take that same information off of the peoples networks??

Come on people, anyone could have come and taken that same information off of your computer. Also they probably wouldn't have come out and admitted that they took it. I think these people are lucky that it was Google, and that they admitted to those crimes.

Current Events That Should or Should Not Have Happened

New York Times: New Sanctions from the U.N. against North Korea

I think it’s quite strange that even though we've had sanctions against North Korea before, and they've threatened us before yet each of their threats has meant nothing. But, now North Korea decides that anymore “attacks” will be probable cause for war??? That’s insanity! They know that if they declare war, they’ll be crushed. So why do they continue to send these stupid threats? Also do they not realize that their biggest supporter just helped right these sanctions against them? China is sick of this attitude as is the rest of world. Kim Jong-un we all know you come from a family of tyrannical brats but the time for screaming and whining is over. Yes you have your little bombs but you’re dealing with people bigger, better armed, and much stronger than you ever wished you could become, so stop it.

New York Times: South Korea Pushes back on North Korea's Threats

South Korea put the big boy pants on. And I mean that in a good way, South Korea is sick of the N.K. playing their stupid games about being treated unfairly and then going out and threatening the U.S. about declaring war. South Korea has finally realized how dumb it is to constantly have a nuclear armed country that "threatens" you. They know that they can take out N.K. and their more than willing to do it. South Korea has said that if N.K. decides to attack or destroy any building, that they will shoot back and take out whatever person shot at them, where he shot it from, and they will also attack up the chain of command in the N.K. South Korea is more than ready to show N.K. just how ready and prepared they are to attack and defend their own country. Way to go South Korea.
